About Ian Maurer Photography

I have taken a keen interest in photographing the world and people around for over fifty years. Starting with my first roll of 620 black and white film in an ancient Kodak Brownie camera at the age of eight, I gradually progressed through a 127 film Kodak Starflash (with replaceable magnesium flash bulbs!), my father’s 35mm Kodak rangefinder and finally to my first SLR, the iconic Asahi Pentax Spotmatic. Along the way I discovered the delight to be found in processing my own monochrome and then colour prints and transparencies.

Twenty years as a part-time professional wedding, portrait and commercial photographer (trading as Bardon Photographics) were not enough to wear out a 35mm Konica SLR and a couple of 645 Bronica medium format cameras, although by the end, I was ready to take a break. After about ten years, a time which saw the world of photography go digital, I now work with a Nikon full-frame digital camera system.

I enjoy photographing people, places and the natural world at my own pace. Freed from the costs of film, processing and prints, I now mostly shoot for fun, not profit.

FREE PHOTOS? Occasionally I meet someone who I think would make a good photography subject, either in the studio or elsewhere. I give them a business card, a brief outline of my offer and suggest they take a look at my website. There are no catches. It costs me nothing but my time. I may use some of the images (if a session happens) for display on this website, but only if the subject is happy for that. In any event, they get a professional set of digital photos to keep.
