Fantasia - A Traditional Christmas Concert
Flyer
Brisbane Concert Choir would love you to join us for our
unique mix of traditional Christmas music
with orchestra. At a time when the heat of the day is (we hope)
waning, but still not too late for the younger
folk, we are pleased to present a collection of traditional
Christmas musical "crackers" in association with
our good friends in the Sinfonia of St Andrew's. There will be
audience participation with well known carols,
a rendition of Away in a Manger by all of the children, and lots
more fun.
A highlight this year is The Snowman, a delightful children's
book by Raymond Briggs, narrated by
Howard Ainsworth with musical accompaniment by orchestra and choir.
Other festive favourites include
excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, and Fantasia
on Christmas Carols by Ralph Vaughan
Williams.
If you haven't been part
of the Christmas festivities with a big choir and full-sized
orchestra then this is
your chance to see what you have been missing. Tickets are available

Come and Sing 'from scratch' - Brahms's
German Requiem (in German)
Rehearsal begins 1pm
Saturday 16th August 2008
- Performance at 7.00pm
This well-known work will be rehearsed
and performed in one day. Rehearsal CDs to play your
part will be available early in May. All of our previous 'from
scratch' performances have been sung in
Latin, so we thought it was time for a change. We will provide
assistance with the German pronunciation
as well, for singers who are not familiar with the language. It is not
too difficult.
With the Sinfonia of St Andrew's, soloists Anita Parakh-Morgan and
Shaun Brown and conductor
Debra Shearer-Dirié.

Handel's Messiah
Flyer
3pm
Sunday 13th July 2008
Most choral music lovers are familiar
with the later editions of Handel's evergreen work, which feature
orchestrations by other composers, using much larger forces than he
originally employed. The result,
when overdone, is really more like Handel on steroids. While there is
almost certainly no single edition
of this work which can be regarded as "the" definitive one (as Handel
produced a number of versions
during his lifetime, as performers and performances dictated), we aim
to perform the work in a form
which is closer to the "original" end of the spectrum than to the
"steroidal". Because of the need to move
our a cappella concert to November (in time for our planned European
trip in December), we have
employed the Southern Hemisphere prerogative of celebrating "Christmas
in July" for this traditionally
advent season music.
With the Sinfonia of St Andrew's and soloists
Milica Ilic, Dorothy Williams, Thomas Moran, Sam Hartley,
and conductor
Debra Shearer-Dirié.

We take every opportunity we can to
perform with young singers, and for this concert we are
looking forward to sharing the stage with two select ensembles from
schools in Brisbane. We
believe that it is important to provide such opportunities, so that
young performers can see and
hear for themselves what it is like to perform with an adult choir.
We hope that some of the
participants will look forward to joining us in the future, but more
than that we hope that all of them
will keep singing for life.
Anthony Young has been involved in getting a huge number of boys
involved in choral music at
St Laurence's College. Tim Sherlock is head of culture at All Hallows'
School.

selections from:
